Step one progress

I've been working on the Unit one pieces off and on for the last couple of days, and for a couple of hours this afternoon. I now have 20 of the pineapple units pieced together. They are slow going. I normally press my seams to one side, but there was too much distortion in these blocks when pressed that way, so I've been pressing the long seams open, which is a bit more time consuming. But, there are enough done now to put up on the design wall and get an idea of how well they play together. I must confess to being quite pleased with the results, so far. 20 down, 100 to go. Yikes.

Cathy they are looking real good. I have a question for you. Are you sewing a scant 1/4 inch seam. If I sew a full quarter inch I will lose the point of the last block. Did I piece mine wrong? I am baffled.

I am doing a very scant 1/4 inch seam. My machine has the ability to move my needle, and i've moved it over a couple of notches. I was losing the points when I was pressing to one side, which is why I switched to pressing open.

Ok, I will try pressing the seams open. I also noticed that my side triangles were longer at the bottom, so I unsewed a couple of them and moved them up, so that I now have a scant quarter inch at the top of the point. Thank goodness I hadn't sewn them all together. I have about 25 done, so that isn't too bad. A minor set back but I will catch up by the weekend. Thanks for the insight. Robin

Beautiful work Kathy! I too press my seams open. I do that for most all my piecing unless I'm strip piecing. It does take more time but I find the end result to a much flatter and smoother block. The positive is that the machine (either domestic or long arm) doesn't have those bumps to jump away from. The negavite is that you cannot do in the ditch quilting as your quilting will break the piecing thread.

I looked closer at the picture of blue triangle units you posted, and I think you are correct that you have pieced the side triangles too low on the centre triangle. Moving them p should fix the problem.
